CLUSTER BOMBS #1: PINEAPPLE

THE PINEAPPLE
The BLU 3 is a cylindrical high explosive bomblet with 255 steel balls embedded in an aluminium case. Six metal tail fins are folded against the case. As each bomblets is released from the dispenser, the fins unfold, arming the fuze and stabilizing the bomblets so that i twill land nose first. When it hit the ground, impact detonate the high explosive filler which burst the bomb case and drives the steel balls outside. The North Vietnamese nickname “pineapple “ come from the resemblance of the yellow-painted bomblet with fins unfolded to the succulent tropical fruit. (…) the BLU-3 bomblet is classified in the manual as an ”antimaterial weapon”. (…)the weapon was “particularly well adapted to the destruction of ramped aircraft and the electronic equipment associated with mobile (or semi-mobile) radar directed missile and cannon defenses” during the opening stages of a full-scale non-nuclear conflict, and “highly effective” later on “ against vehicular convoys, material storage areas, and fuel depots.

L’ANANAS
